Why loose, dry and night-only are not negotiable
In 2025 a medical journal described a 28-year-old woman who used 5% minoxidil twice a day, wore a wig all day, and a tight cap all night. Her scalp was covered almost around the clock. More of the drug reached her bloodstream than it should have. She grew unwanted hair on her face, arms and legs, and woke up with swelling around her eyes. It cleared after she stopped.4
That is the opposite of how the Night Cap is used: loose, over fully dry hair, at night only. If you already wear a wig or a tight hat during the day, talk to your doctor before adding a night cap.

Before you buy
Will covering my hair make minoxidil less effective?
Not if you wait until it's dry. Most absorption happens in the first few hours after you apply it, and the cap goes on after that. If anything the routine helps: product that rubs off on a pillow isn't doing anything for your hair.
Is it safe to cover my scalp overnight?
The documented problems come from tight, near-constant covering over wet product. The Night Cap is the opposite: a loose dome, over dry hair, for the night only. If you have a scalp condition or wear a wig or tight hat during the day, ask your doctor first.
Does it guarantee my pet is safe?
No, and be suspicious of anyone who says their product does. The cap reduces one contact route, the pillow. Pets are also exposed through your hands, your skin, spills and the bottle itself. Wash your hands, store the bottle out of reach, and if you think your pet has had contact, call your vet or ASPCA Poison Control (888-426-4435) right away. Don't wait for symptoms.
I use foam, not liquid. Do I still need it?
Let the foam dry completely before bed. The foam leaflet doesn't give a number of hours, so check with the back of your hand. Dried residue still sheds from your hair onto your pillow through the night, and that is what the cap is for.
Will it stay on all night?
It's cut deep, with an elastic band that sits at the hairline, and it's designed to stay on when you turn over.
Isn't this just a shower cap?
No. It's made for minoxidil nights: a waterproof core, a soft lining and satin on the outside. A thin plastic shower cap crinkles, sweats and is off your head by 2am. This one is made to be slept in, and the routine that comes with it matters as much as the cap.
I'm a guy. Is this for me?
Most minoxidil users are. The cap is unisex and cut extra large, so it fits long and thick hair too. It comes in plain black or navy floral.

Should I switch to oral minoxidil because of my cat?
Not for that reason alone. Oral minoxidil is a good option for many people, but it isn't right for everyone. Its most common side effect is unwanted hair on the face and body, reported in 15.1% of cases in a study of 1,404 patients. If you already deal with unwanted hair, for example with PCOS, that matters. If the topical works for you, the pet risk is something you can manage with your routine: apply early, let it dry, wash your hands, cap on. Which form you use is a decision for you and your doctor.
I already sleep in a silk bonnet. Isn't that enough?
Silk and satin are great for your hair, but they aren't waterproof. Residue soaks into the fabric, and the bonnet ends up on your pillow, your nightstand or under your cat.
