Minoxidil and your pillow

Minoxidil on your pillowcase: stains, residue and what to do

Yes. Liquid minoxidil can stain your pillowcase if it is still damp when you lie down. The leaflet in the box says so: it “may cause staining of clothing or linens if damp on the scalp.”8 The fix is the same as for everything else minoxidil touches at night: let it dry completely, usually 2 to 4 hours, before your head goes on the pillow.8

Why liquid minoxidil marks fabric

Liquid minoxidil is the drug dissolved in alcohol, propylene glycol and water. That is the full list of inactive ingredients on a typical 5% solution.8 Until it has dried, that damp mix transfers to whatever fabric your head touches, and the same spot on the same pillow gets it night after night.

Foam or liquid?

Foam is a different formula. The foam leaflet we checked lists no propylene glycol and carries no staining warning.9 It still says to let the nighttime application dry completely before going to bed.9 Switching from liquid to foam is a question for your doctor or pharmacist, not a laundry decision.

No stain doesn't mean no residue

A clean-looking pillowcase can still carry minoxidil. The ASPCA reports toxicity in cats that simply lay on pillows with minoxidil residue and then groomed themselves, and tells owners to keep pets off pillows, bedding and clothing that may carry residue.6 If a pet sleeps on your bed, treat the pillowcase as part of your routine, stain or no stain.

How to keep it off your pillowcase

  1. Apply after dinner, not at bedtime, so it has 2 to 4 hours to dry.8
  2. Wash your hands with soap and water right after.8
  3. Once it's dry, wear a loose sleep cap. What sheds from your hair stays in the cap and leaves in the wash.
  4. Wash your pillowcase at least once a week, separately from pet bedding.

How do I get minoxidil stains out of a pillowcase?

Wash it with your normal detergent as soon as you notice, at the warmest temperature the care label allows. Older marks may not come out completely, so keeping it dry before bed works better than removing stains later. Wash it separately from pet bedding.

Can minoxidil on my pillowcase get on my face?

It can. Rogaine's guidance warns that product that has not dried can transfer to pillowcases and bed linen, and from there to your face, where it can cause unwanted hair growth.2

Do I need a new pillowcase every night?

No. If you let minoxidil dry completely and wear a cap, a weekly wash is a reasonable routine. If you skip the cap and share your pillow with a pet, change it more often.
