Minoxidil and cats
Minoxidil and cats: what to do at night
Topical minoxidil is toxic to cats, and a cat does not have to drink it to be exposed. The ASPCA warns: “Toxicity has been seen in cats that simply lay on pillows with minoxidil residue and then groom themselves.”6 In a review of 211 poison-control cases in dogs and cats, 62 cats developed symptoms and 8 of those cats died (12.9%).1 If you use minoxidil and live with a cat, you don't have to give up your treatment: apply it early, let it dry completely, wash your hands, keep the bottle shut away, and keep what sheds from your hair overnight off the pillow your cat sleeps on.

Is minoxidil toxic to cats?
Yes. The ASPCA says cats are more sensitive to minoxidil than dogs, and that even very small exposures can be life-threatening.6 In 211 poison-control cases reviewed in the Journal of the American Animal Hospital Association, pets became ill from amounts as small as drops or licks.1 In 2025 a review in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology called on prescribers to warn minoxidil users about the risk to household pets.5
How do cats get exposed to minoxidil at home?
Most often through their owner's own use of the product. In the 211-case review, the most common route for cats was licking the owner's skin or pillowcase, or a spill.1 The pillow matters because of how minoxidil dries. The label tells you to let it dry for 2 to 4 hours before bed, because product that has not dried can transfer to pillowcases and bed linen.2 The ASPCA reports toxicity in cats that simply lay on pillows with minoxidil residue and then groomed themselves.6
What to do at night if you use minoxidil and live with a cat
You don't need to quit a treatment that works. The goal is less minoxidil on the things your cat touches: your hands, your hair and your pillow.
- Apply after dinner, not at bedtimeThe label says to let liquid minoxidil dry for 2 to 4 hours before you lie down. For foam, the leaflet gives no number of hours: let it dry completely.2
- Wash your hands with soapDo it after every application, before you touch your cat. Residue on your hands ends up on everything you touch next.
- Shut the bottle away and wipe up spillsA spill, a bottle left within reach and a used applicator in the trash are all routes described in the veterinary literature.1
- Don't let your cat lick your scalp, hair or treated skinLicking the owner's skin is one of the routes the 211-case review describes for cats.1
- Cover dry hair with a cap made for minoxidilOnce your hair is fully dry, put on a loose sleep cap. What sheds from your hair overnight stays in the cap and leaves in the wash, instead of building up on the pillowcase your cat sleeps on.
- Wash what touches your headWash the cap and your pillowcase at least once a week, separately from pet bedding. The ASPCA tells owners to keep pets off pillows, bedding and clothing that may carry residue.6
My cat licked minoxidil or slept on my pillow. What should I do?
Call your vet or ASPCA Poison Control at 888-426-4435 right away. Do not wait for symptoms. The ASPCA warns that for cats even very small exposures can be life-threatening.6
Does a sleep cap make minoxidil safe for cats?
No, and be suspicious of any product that says it does. A cap reduces one contact route, the pillow. Cats are also exposed through your hands, your skin, spills and the bottle itself. That is why the cap is the last step of the routine above, not a replacement for it.
Should I switch to oral minoxidil because of my cat?
Not for that reason alone. Oral minoxidil is a good option for many people, but it isn't right for everyone. Its most common side effect is unwanted hair on the face and body, reported in 15.1% of cases in a study of 1,404 patients. If you already deal with unwanted hair, for example with PCOS, that matters. If the topical works for you, the pet risk is something you can manage with your routine: apply early, let it dry, wash your hands, cap on. Which form you use is a decision for you and your doctor.7
The last step
The Night Cap: the sleep cap made for minoxidil
The Night Cap is a loose sleep cap made for minoxidil. It goes on over fully dry hair, at night only, and keeps tonight's dose where you put it: satin on the outside, a waterproof layer in the middle, and a soft lining that holds what flakes off until wash day. It comes in plain black or navy floral.
